Nate Schulman was a trained physical therapist that developed a manipulation technique (Shulman Therapy) that relieves pain and and helps the body to re-align itself.
Schulman was trained in the use of Tens and Mens as well as the standard methodology of physical therapy but was dissatisfied with the temporary effects it had. He found that hands-on manual manipulation of the bone, muscle and sinew worked more effectively.
When Nate Shulman worked on our family members we saw a collection of machines in the corner covered in dust and Nate came armed with only a hand towel.
“A bad back is like a rusty chain all lock up and stuck together” he said. “You can take a hammer and force it loose like what a Chiropractor does but some of links will still be stuck together and chain still won’t be straight. Or you can wiggle it and wiggle it until its a mailable and a usable chain again.”
Nate would use his forearm and grind into the areas where the bones were connected to the tendons and then muscle tissue.
Shulman Therapy breaks up congested areas so blood can flow and nerves can unpinch themselves. The work is done with the patient fully clothed and a towel for friction.
He told many patients, “This is easy you can do this and save yourself some money and time getting here.” As a result my brother-in-law knows the whole neck and shoulder treatment because Nate taught him to practice this technique on his wife.
Diane, his sister, can do the full body treatment while I learned the back hips and legs, carpel tunnel and Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ).
A close friend, Linda Cittel, lives in Costa Mesa has a certificate from Nate Shulman for a hundred hours and puts in more than that every few months as she continues his legacy.
My sister in law and I became certified massage therapists so we continue his work as well and Linda gave me the rest of the wisdom so now my treatments are complete. Linda also has a sign over her table with his motto, “IT HURTS BUT IT WORKS” and many of my clients will agree!
Linda Cittel carries on the tradition of charging reasonable rates. As for Nate, a session with him was only $25.00 for many many years.
Nate Schulman had a large loyal following and practiced his technique up to six months before his death. He died in his ninety’s and is missed by many because he was a kind and witty man.
At the Holistic Wellness Center we charge only $45.00 per half an hour treatment and if you are a certified massage therapist and would like to learn Schulman therapy let us know by leaving a comment and we’ll put a class together.
Schulman therapy is not yet recognized as a healing modality by the state of California so certification may not be valid. But Nate would have loved to know that his work is carried on and we would love to teach it to you!
Schulman therapy certification is not patented or was never patented by Nate Schulman He only taught those who were interested in learning.
